Rheumatologists Help Reduce ED, Hospitalization Costs

According to a new report from the American College of Rheumatology (ACR), rheumatology care can save health systems more than $2,700 per patient per year.

In a recent white paper by authors  Christina Downey, MD, Marcus Snow, MD, Roberto Caricchio, MD, Jennifer Moody, Tessa Kerby and Daniel Battafarano, DO, the ACR layed out precisely how rheumatology care delivers financial benefits for hospital systems, along with improved outcomes–

The analysis by authors utilized adjusted payer claims data to compare markets with a high vs low supply of rheumatologists. A “high” supply referenced in the report is defined as at least 1.5 rheumatologists per 100,000 population, whereas a low supply is defined as less than this amount.  KEY FINDING:  Geographic areas with a high supply of rheumatologists had lower emergency department (ED) and hospitalization costs per patient per year.
